1903 GORDON BENNETT CUP RACE The 1903 Gordon Bennett Cup motor race was held on 2 July 1903, on a circuit of closed roads in Leinster, Ireland, consisting of seven laps. British driver, Selwyn Edge, won the 1902 Gordon Bennett Cup, which meant the Automobile Club of Britain and Ireland would host the race in 1903. As racing on British roads was illegal, legislation was passed to allow the race to take place on roads in Ireland, then part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The Automobile Club of Britain and Ireland commissioned timekeepers pocket watches for the 1903 race. From Messers Stauffer Son & Co., London and Chaux de Fonds, an open face silver cased pocket watch, white enamel dial with subsidiary second and minute dials.
