6 TOI ETMOI two is the new one! In jewellery terms ‘toi et moi’ describes a ring with two stones that wrap around the finger meeting in the middle.The French term meaning ‘you and me’ has obvious romantic connotations with no exception in the jewellery world with the two stones meant to symbolise a coming together.The design is extremely visually appealing; although the stones are offset to one another there is a very satisfying asymmetry to the look, the stones can be matching or different stones / sizes or cuts. Toi et Moi rings have been around for centuries, and the style is seen in many antique rings par ticularly in the 19th Century as well as throughout the 20th century, it was first popularised by Napoloean Bonapar te who proposed to Josephine with a sapphire and diamond toi et moi ring. Another exceptionally famous ring of this style is the Queen of Denmark’s engagement ring which features two exquisite six carat square diamonds by Van Cleef & Arpels, Jackie Kennedy also loved this style wearing a beautiful emerald and diamond wrap around ring. There has been a modern revival of the style also with celebrities like Ariana Grande and Megan Fox spor ting one, however the vintage and antique iterations remain ever popular in O’Reilly’s Auction rooms and we have several to offer in our upcoming auction: Lot 314 is a super vintage diamond toi et moi with an estimate of €4400 – 4800, Lot 205 is a sweet emerald and diamond version estimated at €1000 – 1400, lot 146 is a modern take with princess cuts €500 – 700 and lots 124 & 285 are also diamond set variations.
